Happy Book Birthday, Lindsay Cummings!

HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY!!

That's right! Book 1 in the Balance Keepers series by Lindsay Cummings is out TODAY!
If you haven't picked up a copy, you should! Why? Cause Lindsay Cummings is an amazing author!

What is the book about?

The Fires of Calderon is Book One in Lindsay Cummings's epic Balance Keepers series. These exciting fantasy adventure books are full of magic, mystery, friendship, and humor and are perfect for fans of books like Brandon Mull's The Candy Shop War or the Unwanteds series by Lisa McMann.
Bestselling author of the Skeleton Creek series Patrick Carman describes The Fires of Calderon as "fast paced and packed with adventure," and Peter Lerangis, bestselling author of the Seven Wonders series, says, "Wow!"
With themes of friendship, self-discovery, and courage; both boy and girl main characters; fierce creatures to battle; a mystery to solve; and a boarding school that could be described as Hogwarts underground, there's something for every reader to enjoy in this contemporary—and fantastically imaginative—spin on the classic Journey to the Center of the Earth.
When eleven-year-old Albert Flynn follows a mysterious map deep into the woods, and then under the woods, he discovers he's a Balance Keeper—someone with special magical skills for keeping harmony in fantastical underground worlds. Together with his teammates Leroy and Birdie, Albert must master his magical talents in time to stop the fires in the Calderon Realm from destroying New York City above.

Friday Reads [9]

19367272

This weekend I am planning on continuing to read Anatomy of a Misfit by Andrea Portes. So far I am really enjoying it. It reminds me a lot of Mean Girls, which I really enjoy. I probably won't finish this book this weekend because I'm in kind of a reading slump so I'm reading extremely slow.. Even more slow than I usually read haha. I'm hoping that something crazy will happen in this book that will pull me out of this slump that I'm in!

What are you reading this weekend?

Release Date: September 16, 2014

**I just have to add that I am SUPER excited for this release. Ever since I read her first book, The Sky Is Everywhere, I've been wanting more by this author!**

A brilliant, luminous story of first love, family, loss, and betrayal for fans of John Green, David Levithan, and Rainbow Rowell

Jude and her twin brother, Noah, are incredibly close. At thirteen, isolated Noah draws constantly and is falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude cliff-dives and wears red-red lipstick and does the talking for both of them. But three years later, Jude and Noah are barely speaking. Something has happened to wreck the twins in different and dramatic ways . . . until Jude meets a cocky, broken, beautiful boy, as well as someone else—an even more unpredictable new force in her life. The early years are Noah's story to tell. The later years are Jude's. What the twins don't realize is that they each have only half the story, and if they could just find their way back to one another, they’d have a chance to remake their world.

This radiant novel from the acclaimed, award-winning author of The Sky Is Everywhere will leave you breathless and teary and laughing—often all at once.

Review: Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

Publisher: Square Fish

Pages: 224
Series: Standalone
Release Date: May 10, 2011

I am Outcast.
The kids behind me laugh so loud I know they're laughing about me. I can't help myself. I turn around. It's Rachel, surrounded by a bunch of kids wearing clothes from the Eastside Mall. Rachel Bruin, my ex-best friend. She stares at something above my left ear. Words climb up my throat. This was the girl who suffered through Brownies with me, who taught me how to swim, who understood about my parents, who didn't make fun of my bedroom. If there is anyone in the entire galaxy I am dying to tell what really happened, it's Rachel. My throat burns.
Her eyes meet mine for a second. "I hate you," she mouths silently.

Melinda Sordino's freshman year is off to a horrible start. She busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, and now her friends--and even strangers--all hate her. Months pass and things aren't getting better. She's a pariah. The lowest of the low. Avoided by everyone. But eventually, she'll reveal what happened at the party. And when she finally speaks the truth, everything will change.

Okay, so I'm not going to lie. This book talked about a very touchy subject that hits close to home for me. I was a little hesitant to read it once I found out what it was about, but I gave it a shot anyways. I told myself that if it got too bad to read, it would be okay to put it down.

Before I go into how I felt about the book, I want to say something. If anyone has been a victim of abuse, either sexual or physical, don't be afraid to tell someone. You are not alone and there will be people there for you that will help you get through things. Getting through something like that alone is not possible. It makes things worse. Talking to someone about what happened will allow you to get help and also make you feel better. Again, you are not alone. Talk to someone!

Now on to my feelings about the book. There were some parts that I liked and there were some parts that I wasn't a big fan of. The way the author writes is so powerful. She makes you feel all kinds of emotions. Throughout the whole book, I felt a connection with the main character, Melinda. I could feel pretty much every emotion that she was feeling. Sometimes it got to where I felt like I really was her. It was kind of scary to be honest.

I thought that the main character, Melinda, was such a strong character. She had to deal with so much throughout the whole book and never once did she give up. Sure it may have taken her a year to speak to someone about what really happened to her at the party, but she did eventually speak. The truth was finally told. I thought that it was so heartbreaking that her own friends wouldn't listen to her and let her explain to them what had happened to her.

I think that this story is definitely worth reading. I think that it teaches a good lesson to teens as well as others as well. I have heard that this book is a required reading at some schools and I can see why it is. If it isn't, I think that it should be. I think that kids need to read about something like this. There are so many people who have to deal with things like this and knowing that they really can go to someone and tell them what happened can be a good thing to let them know.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book. I think that it teaches a great lesson that many people should read about.

Blog Makeover!

Yes, that's right! As you can tell, my blog got a little makeover! To be honest, I was getting a little tired of the way it was looking. I have a new theme, new rating images, and a few other new things. There will probably be a few more smaller changes here and there. I really like my new theme and I hope you guys like it too!

SHHHH!
Don't spread the word!
Three-day weekend. Party at White Rock House on Henry Island.
You do NOT want to miss it.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

WOW. This book was crazy. It was not only really good, but it was also really scary. I'm not one for liking scary things because I get nightmares really easily but I could not stop reading this book!

All of the characters were very unique in their own way. I really enjoyed getting the perspective of Meg. I think that she was the best character to get the POV from.

I also really liked the romance in this book. I was really hoping that the two people who wanted to be together actually ended up together in the end.

Throughout the whole book, it had me really wanting to know who the murderer was. Just when I thought I knew, they would get killed off and I was left confused again. I loved having to try to figure out who it was. But then that ending.. THAT ENDING. That was NOT what I was expecting. Oh man. When the stuff happened at the end, I'm pretty sure my eyes grew wide and my mouth dropped open. A big plot twist for sure.

Although this book was a spin off of another book (And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie) I still really enjoyed this book. I thought that it was really well written and very enjoyable.

Overall, I am so glad that I decided to give this book a shot. It helped me out of my reading slump! If you like mysterious and scary books, this one is definitely for you!

Review: Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Source: Purchased
Pages: 449
Series: Standalone
Release Date: May 6, 2014

The Pre-Sloane Emily didn't go to parties, she barely talked to guys, she didn't do anything crazy. Enter Sloane, social tornado and the best kind of best friend—the one who yanks you out of your shell. But right before what should have been an epic summer, Sloane just... disappears. No note. No calls. No texts. No Sloane. There’s just a random to-do list. On it, thirteen Sloane-selected-definitely-bizarre-tasks that Emily would never try... unless they could lead back to her best friend. Apple Picking at Night? Ok, easy enough.Dance until Dawn? Sure. Why not? Kiss a Stranger? Wait... what?

Getting through Sloane’s list would mean a lot of firsts. But Emily has this whole unexpected summer ahead of her, and the help of Frank Porter (totally unexpected) to check things off. Who knows what she’ll find?

Go Skinny Dipping? Um...

Oh my gosh. This book is beyond amazing. When I got to the end, I wanted more. Like, I really did NOT want it to end! LOVED IT.

This was my first book that I have read by Morgan Matson. I can guarantee that this will not be my last!

I could relate to the main character so perfectly. I loved being able to go through everything with her as she grew throughout the book. I felt like I was one of her friends while I was reading this book. It was just so awesome.

The romance in this book was awesome. It wasn't one of those books where it was mainly focused on the romance, but it just kind of happened. AND I AM SO GLAD IT HAPPENED! OH MY GOSH. I loved Emily and the boy who I will not mention together! SO CUTE.

I thought that the whole idea of this book was amazing. I kind of wish I had a best friend and one that would do this for me to help break me out of my shell! I think that the list was super awesome and sounded really fun but also scary.

I loved the friendship aspect in this book. I have had some really bad experiences with friendships in the past, which is why I don't have a best friend, and I loved everything about Emily and Sloane's friendship. I think that Emily is very lucky to have such a great best friend to want to help her. I want a best friend like that!

I also think that the music in this book was awesome! The playlist that were in the book had some super awesome music in them and I discovered some songs that I didn't know about that I really like!

Overall, I REALLY like this book. It is a perfect summer read. I definitely suggest reading this book! You'll love it!

I am giving away my paperback ARC copy of The Girl in the Road by Monica Byrne! I received this copy but I have no intention to read it and I need more space on my bookshelf!

Interested in entering? Click here!

Stunningly original and wildly inventive, The Girl in the Road melds the influences of Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman, and Erin Morgenstern for a dazzling debut.

Meena, a young woman living in a futuristic Mumbai, wakes up with five snake bites on her chest. She doesn't know how or why, but she must flee India and return to Ethiopia, the place of her birth. Having long heard about The Trail -- an energy-harvesting bridge that spans the Arabian Sea -- she embarks on foot on this forbidden bridge, with its own subculture and rules. What awaits her in Ethiopia is unclear; she's hoping the journey will illuminate it for her.

Mariama, a girl from a different time, is on a quest of her own. After witnessing her mother's rape, she joins up with a caravan of strangers heading across Saharan Africa. She meets Yemaya, a beautiful and enigmatic woman who becomes her protector and confidante. Yemaya tells Mariama of Ethiopia, where revolution is brewing and life will be better. Mariama hopes against hope that it offers much more than Yemaya ever promised.

As one heads east and the other west, Meena and Mariama's fates will entwine in ways that are profoundly moving and shocking to the core. Vividly imagined and artfully told, written with stunning clarity and deep emotion, The Girl in the Road is a true tour de force.

Thank you for entering and good luck to all of those who do enter! (:

TBR Thursday [4]

This is a weekly meme where I will post the last book that I added to my TBR Shelf on Goodreads!

The Merciless by Danielle Vega

Forgive us, Father, for we have sinned

Brooklyn Stevens sits in a pool of her own blood, tied up and gagged. No one outside of these dank basement walls knows she’s here. No one can hear her scream.

Sofia Flores knows she shouldn’t have gotten involved. When she befriended Riley, Grace, and Alexis on her first day at school, she admired them, with their perfect hair and their good-girl ways. They said they wanted to save Brooklyn. They wanted to help her. Sofia didn’t realize they believed Brooklyn was possessed.

Now, Riley and the girls are performing an exorcism on Brooklyn—but their idea of an exorcism is closer to torture than salvation. All Sofia wants is to get out of this house. But there is no way out. Sofia can’t go against the other girls . . . unless she wants to be next. . . .

In this chilling debut, Danielle Vega delivers blood-curdling suspense and terror on every page. By the shockingly twisted end, readers will be faced with the most haunting question of all: Is there evil in all of us?

Review: The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

Publisher: Speak
Source: Purchased
Pages: 277
Series: Standalone
Release Date: June 7, 2010

Seventeen-year-old Lennie Walker, bookworm and band geek, plays second clarinet and spends her time tucked safely and happily in the shadow of her fiery older sister, Bailey. But when Bailey dies abruptly, Lennie is catapulted to center stage of her own life - and, despite her nonexistent history with boys, suddenly finds herself struggling to balance two. Toby was Bailey's boyfriend; his grief mirrors Lennie's own. Joe is the new boy in town, a transplant from Paris whose nearly magical grin is matched only by his musical talent. For Lennie, they're the sun and the moon; one boy takes her out of her sorrow, the other comforts her in it. But just like their celestial counterparts, they can't collide without the whole wide world exploding.

This remarkable debut is perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen, Deb Caletti, and Francesca Lia Block. Just as much a celebration of love as it is a portrait of loss, Lennie's struggle to sort her own melody out of the noise around her is always honest, often hilarious, and ultimately unforgettable.

Let me start off by saying that the reason I picked up this book finally is because of Whitney at WhittyNovels talked about this book in one of her videos. (You can watch that video here.) The way she talked about it, I just KNEW I had to pick it up as soon as I could. So thank you, Whitney!

So this book is about a girl named Lennie who is struggling with the loss of her older sister Bailey. She lives with her grandmother, Gram, and her uncle, Big. This story is about her struggle with the loss of her sister as well as other things which I cannot mention because spoilers. There is also Toby, who was Bailey's boyfriend. His griefs and Lennie's are pretty much the same. Then enters the new boy, Joe. Some things go down and it causes you to feel all kinds of feels. Haha. I can't say too much because I don't want to spoil anything.

First, I want to talk about each of the characters. Lennie is such a relateable character, in my opinion. She is going through so many things that people have to deal with each day. I feel like she grows and learns so much as the story progresses. Sure she makes some mistakes, but she learns from them and does what she needs to do to fix these mistakes. I really liked her character. Gram is such a likable character. Sure, she kept some secrets from Lennie but I think it was for her own good. Gram has a big heart and really cares about Lennie and her well-being. I found Big to be a very strange character. I mean what normal person thinks they can bring back to life?! Haha. I didn't really like or dislike him as a character but I think that's only because he wasn't present a lot in the story. I really liked Toby. I thought his character had to go through a lot because of Bailey's death, but I think he handled everything very well. Joe was my favorite character in the book. I found him to be smart, funny, romantic, and an overall great guy. I think that it was really cute how he made Lennie so happy. He was able to keep her mind off the loss of her sister. When Lennie was with him, she felt no greif. Joe came into her life in a time when she really needed someone that wasn't a part of her family or wasn't her sister's boyfriend.

I thought the author did a really great job with the plot, descriptions, and the world building. There were some parts in the book that I could really picture in my head the scene and what was happening. One scene for example is when she is taking Joe to this outdoor room that is owned by a hotel not far from her house. The way everything was described, I could picture about what this scene would look like if it were real. I really enjoy when I am able to picture things authors are talking about.

One thing that I liked about this book were all the notes Lennie had written on random things. These were shown in the beginning of almost every chapter. Because of these, I feel like I was able to see more of how the relationship between Lennie and Bailey was. I also feel like it helped me connect more with Lennie and the emotions that she was dealing with.

I feel like music played a big role in this book. Music was a way that Lennie and Joe connected. I feel that music actually helped Lennie grow throughout the book. Music not only connected he with Joe but it also helped he with her grieving and it helped her grow out of Bailey's shadow and into her own spotlight.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. I think I may have to add it to my favorites list. I definitely recommend giving this book a shot. Just remember that if you do read it, you will be on an emotional roller-coaster. Prepare to feel all of the feels!
